Sierra Leone: Premier News, Africell launch news updates

One of the most trusted sources of news in Sierra Leone, Premier News, in collaboration with leading telecom operator, Africell, on Thursday, July 9, 2021, launched News Updates, a platform that gives opportunity to Africell subscribers to get the latest news from Premier News through SMS (Short Message Service).

The Launch was done at Africell’s American Corner, Bathurst Street in Freetown.

Africell customers who wish to subscribe for the News Updates can send “Start to 2122” for prompt subscription. Only Le300 will be charged per day for this service and news will be sent via SMS twice a day.

The Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Africell, Joe Abass Bangura, said that Premier Media, the company that owns Premier News has its footprint in radio, newspaper and consultancy services. He added that by subscribing to the News Updates by send “Start to 2122”, subscribers would have access to breaking and credible news from trusted sources. “To be informed to be empowered,” he said. He acknowledged the management of Premier Media for partnering with Africell.

The Managing Director of Premier Media Group, Dr Julius Spencer, disclosed that Premier Media was established in 2001 while the Premier News was established 2007.

He said that the media industry in Sierra Leone is changing and everything is going digital and that the culture of buying of newspapers is dwindling. “We need to move with the times,” he added.

He said that the Managements of Africell and Premier Media have been working on SMS News Update for a while and they are happy that it has come to fruition. He said Premier News will post news more than once a day on the platform. He called Africell customers to subscribe to the SMS news to access breaking and credible news.
